This will be the briefest post you'll ever read here but that doesn't mean it's not as profound as it is simple. I heard it from my friend and great photographer Bill Fortney. Bill's too modest to say it was his so he'd tell you he heard it from someone else. But it is just too good not to share.
The secret to great landscape photographs is ...
... going to the same place over and over. Duh. Told you it was simple, but that's the reality of landscape work. Photographs are all about the light, and the light is all about the weather. And the weather is what you get that day. Sometimes you're lucky. As often you're not. But if the subject truly inspires you, go back. The next day, week, month, year... you get it. I love the sand dunes in Death Valley, so I'm going back for my fourth visit soon. Believe it or not, I know people who have been to Kenya 20+ times. You can be sure when they show their best Kenya images, jaws drop.
But it doesn't have to be around the world. This is my back yard. Every now and then I look out from my porch and think,
"That is beautiful light." Then I go get my camera and tripod. You're seeing last summer with full foliage. Now, in case you haven't been exploring with your mouse, hover over the picture and see what I found in the backyard this morning. You can be sure I'm on my way to a four season project now.
If it's a landscape wonder, it's worth more than just one visit.
