The Rolling Stones were dead on singing,
"You can't always get what you waaaant!"
This was slated to be a great shot for a Nikon Coolpix ad. What could say "Lifestyle" better than two cute, young California girls heading for the waves with their surfboards. Light was nice, it all worked. But advertising images need releases, and eventually the releases for this shot didn't work out. It was what I had wanted, but was not meant to be.
(Is that the Stones in the background?)
Fortunately, after I made this shot, I still had time and light. In fact I had great light as the sun dropped toward the Pacific, spewing first gold onto the water, then shades of orange into the sky. I hung on the beach moving side to side quickly, staying with bodies in the surf, lining them up against reflections or balancing them against the orb of sun.
First I got this as more surfers ran toward the water...
Then a primordial scene of a lone figure in the water...
And as the sun began dropping behind low clouds, a breaking wave caught the last rays of sun...

As a photographer, you find over and over that the shot you intended to make isn't the one that ends up being used, or may not even have been the best of the shoot. Frankly that day with the Coolpix P-90, the lower the sun got in the sky, the more interesting the images became. When all was said and done, I didn't get the image I wanted but I couldn't have been happier.
